Hackers usually like to work quietly, but that’s not always the case … as residents of Dallas can now attest in a recent Internet of Things breach.
Prankers Get Noisy in Dallas as the Internet of Things is Hacked
It seems that one or more technically savvy miscreants (clearly with nothing better to do) decided to set off all 156 emergency sirens in Dallas at one time, starting at 11:42 p.m. and running through 1:17 a.m. on April 7 – 8. The sirens went through 15 cycles of 90-second activation before they could be shut down. It then took more than 24 hours for the emergency system to be properly restarted. Officials think the hacking originated in the Dallas area.
That event is just another recent example of how hackers who target the Internet of Things can seriously disrupt lives and cost time and money. Fortunately, while a lot of people lost a good night’s sleep, no one was injured or killed because of the breach … this time. However, with the number IoT targets numbering in the billions, that luck won’t always hold. As part of The SynchroNet Way, we’ll be happy to check your systems for vulnerabilities.
